The Temple Core

The stones are transmitting. The pedestal is an input terminal. And the moment Dev’s palm meets the brass ring, a five-minute countdown begins.

The stones themselves were transmitting — and they had noticed the three of them arrive.

The midnight air at the Hanamkonda ruins was cold, filled with the hum of crickets — and something else. A faint, low-frequency vibration resonated beneath the stone pathways, vibrating up through the soles of Maya’s boots.

She had felt it from the perimeter. Up close, standing between the broken pillars with the archway rising over them, it was unmistakable — a pulse in the granite itself, too steady to be anything but deliberate. Behind her, two headlights had become two people. Dev, already prowling the courtyard with his flashlight. And Zara, who had said almost nothing since they arrived, her attention swallowed whole by the device in her hands.

Zara swept her handheld sensor across the ancient carved archway. The digital readout on her device spiked, lines of code flickering wildly across the small LCD display.

“The field density here is insane,” Zara said, adjusting her glasses as her eyes tracked the sensor data. “Maya, this isn’t magnetic or electrical. The ambient energy… it’s structured like encrypted network packets. The stones themselves are transmitting.”

The words settled over the courtyard like the cold. Transmitting. Not decaying, not resonating by accident — transmitting, in structured packets, out of stone that had stood silent since before the city had a name.

And as the three of them stood there, the ruins seemed to notice. Subtle lines of glowing blue light began to trace the ancient carvings on the pillars, kindling groove by groove, spreading upward and outward from where they stood — as if the temple were slowly opening its eyes.

Dev stepped up to the central stone pedestal, brushing away decades of dust. Beneath the dirt was a pristine geometric inlay — a series of concentric brass rings embedded directly into the granite, identical to the architectural diagrams from Maya’s notebook.

“Look at the interface,” Dev muttered, shining his flashlight onto the pedestal. “It’s not an altar. It’s an input terminal.”

Not an altar. An input terminal — concentric brass rings, machined clean, waiting a thousand years for someone to connect. — the moment the temple becomes a machine

Maya approached, pulling up her tablet. She connected a wireless diagnostic bridge to the pedestal’s edge, where a tiny, hidden fibre-like channel ran through the stone. The connector seated with a soft click, and a single pulse of light travelled up the cable into her screen.

Then the interface resolved — and her stomach dropped.

“A five-minute timer?” Zara gasped, looking over Maya’s shoulder. “What happens when it hits zero?”

“The gateway opens unconditionally,” Maya said, her fingers flying across her tablet as she attempted to decrypt the incoming data stream. “Or worse… a full system purge of the surrounding sector.”

Four fifty-one. Four fifty. The numbers fell with the patience of something that had all the time in the world and was only counting to be polite.

Dev placed his palm near the central brass ring. The moment his skin made contact with the static field, the entire temple courtyard illuminated. Deep crimson light surged through the carved grooves of the stone floor, tracing a massive, ancient circuit board that stretched into the darkness.

“Maya!” Dev called out, his voice echoing against the stone. “It’s asking for an execution key. Whatever logic you built in your low-code models — we need it right now!”

Four twenty. Maya stared at the falling clock, at the crimson circuit blazing under her feet, at the brass rings waiting for an answer she had spent her whole career learning how to write. She flexed her fingers over the tablet.
